Infection Diagnostics

Research, guidance and support to improve infection diagnosis and management

In vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests can more accurately detect disease, conditions and infections. They can also distinguish between bacterial and viral infections to rule out the unnecessary use of antibiotics and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance.

Our Infection Diagnostics research is linked to the interests and priorities of the Healthcare Associated Infection Research Group and includes infection diagnosis and management, infection control and antimicrobial resistance. We operate a shared goal of excellence for patient care and public health.

We aim to:

  • Produce research that directly informs the clinical use of both established and emerging IVDs
  • Support clinical trials with high quality infection diagnostics
  • Partner with internal and external researchers as the most effective way to develop new infection diagnostics
  • Produce consequent contemporary guidance for the NHS on infection diagnostics
