Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s (LTHT) official charity partner Leeds Cares has provided a source of funding the trusts Research and Innovation department to host the ‘Leeds Cares Clinical Research Internship Scheme 2020’.
The internship scheme will support budding clinicians who wish to pursue a clinical academic research career and will enable successful candidates to have protected time to prepare a research fellowship application and ultimately pursue a research career.
Following a shortlisting process, the panel (Professor Anne-Maree Keenan, Heather Iles-Smith and Rebecca Savage) interviewed eight very strong candidates, of which six individuals were successful in obtaining funding.
Speaking about being awarded an internship Angela Burgin, Advanced Clinical Pharmacist at LTHT said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to bits to have been awarded a Leeds Cares Internship. I am really excited about the time, networking, opportunities and development that this award will afford. I can’t wait to get started.”
Another successful individual Ryan Longley, Clinical Scientist at LTHT said: “I’m happy to receive the Leeds Cares Internship and look forward to getting the most out of the award in order to jump-start a career as a clinical academic”
speaking about the scheme, Professor Keenan said: “It is great to see the quality of applicants for these important awards: those awarded demonstrated great ambition with a clear and realistic pathway of what is required for success. It will be exciting to see how they all progress.”
Heather Iles-Smit added: “I am delighted that Leeds Cares, LTHT and the University of Leeds have been able to collaboratively support the development of our clinicians, who have shown real potential as future clinical academics. It is so important that talented clinicians are nurtured and supported to improve care through undertaking research and implement their research findings”

By investing in these clinicians at an early stage in their research career, we know many of them will go on to do further study and take part in life-changing projects. We’re looking forward to seeing what these six candidates achieve in the year ahead.”
